If you are interested in asking me to create an artwork for you, but are unsure how the process works, you’re in the right place! Here I’ve listed the steps we’ll go through to get the piece you’re after.
Curious about Commissions – Check out the style of my drawings and paintings and the price chart, think about your budget, size and subject interests, and contact me.
Initial Conversation & Meeting
We will chat about what you are looking for, options to work with your budget and size requirements, decide whether your needs are aligned with what I can offer and if so move forwards. We begin with some or all of the following:
- look at my work in the studio to get a feel for the style
- look at photographs and ideas for regions and subjects
- look at your photos, special locations for subjects (holiday or home), talk about feelings, colours, moods you are after
- decide on size, medium, timeline and budget
- settle on one or two directions, progress to mock-ups and a final piece.
Stage One: Deposit and Mock-ups
Before work begins, we will sign an agreement and complete the deposit portion of payment. Deposits are roughly 25% of the cost. I make three small mockups to give a sense of colours and feelings discussed in our meeting. Client chooses one and we can refine as needed. This stage helps align our expectations.
Stage Two: Artwork In Progress
Clients have an opportunity to view the piece and approve or request small adjustments about 3/4 of the way to completion. No major changes happen in this phase.
Stage Three: Completion and Delivery
Completed artwork is approved by the client and remaining balance is paid. The artwork is safely packaged and delivered to you.
What’s included? How does pricing work? – All materials and labour are included in the pricing. Drawings usually come in a museum hinged mat, paintings on panel are ready to hang. Framing is not included, but we will discuss options and I can coordinate with a framing shop. Commissions are commonly at a marginally higher price point than purchasing existing work due to the extra preparation. Pricing structure is based on complexity of the style, materials, and size.
How long will it take? – Smaller pieces can be completed in a month, larger pieces take 2-3 months or longer depending on current workload.
What if I don’t like it? – The initial discussions and mock-ups phase are in place to help prevent any problems. Should you be unhappy with the final piece and not wish to purchase it, the work will remain the property of the artist, and the deposit will not be refunded, but no further payments are necessary.
